Begin by keeping success in mind, and invest in the best quality gear (not necessarily the most expensive) that you can afford. This is crucial advice for beginners.
When we say “getting started,” we mean the absolute minimum gear needed to begin fly fishing. The basic equipment you'll need includes:
A fly rod
A fly reel with fly fishing line, line backing, a leader, and a tippet.
A fishing fly that is appropriate for your fishing location.
Much of the enjoyment in learning to fly fish comes from gradually selecting and adding the necessary items to progress to your desired next level.
Step #1 is selecting the fly rod and reel.
As we just said, all you need to get started is a fly rod, a fly reel, a fly line, and some flies. But there are a few important details that go along with that statement.
